Yacht racing photos - Taking a very sharp turn

I was on one knee at the back of the press boat (a small fishing boat with two powerful engines) when I turned to see the 'Lauraus' not eight feet away with bow squared straight at me, my head was about the same height as the crews shoes. A very sharp turn from the Lauraus and a dash forward by our skipper saved me one hell of a headache! The sharp turn toppled a crew member who had to be grabbed quickly or she would likely have gone overboard. Exciting stuff.

With hulls exposed and bow cutting into the water I was amazed at how fast these quite giants could cut through the water, from shores edge they appear to be moving quite sedately, but up close I could hardly get shots off before the yachts had passed leaving less dramatic photos of the stern fading into the Caribbean Sea. Love the full sails and open view of the hull as the yacht turns course.

Yacht racing photography - Close running

For something a little different, as most photographers can imagine if they have not done so, getting up close and personal with racing yachts is a great way to spend a couple of hours. Lots of color, plenty of action and super to photograph. The skipper on the press boat really got us in the action and I had a thrilling time trying to capture the energy of these large and very fast moving yachts.

Iguana - Lizards of Tobago - Wildlife photography. Sometimes you get a little lucky, as I did here when I came across this Iguana fairly low in tree branches as I walked around in a small mangrove. He had obviously been shedding skin as the front foot shows, and was still catching itself as I stumbled upon it, being generous enough to allow me to get a shot off before taking itself off to safer heights with some speed.

Cat photo - Portrait of a gentleman. I caught Chum resting quietly this afternoon and at my passing he looked up to satisfy himself there was no need to move (which equates to no food being offered). He was kind enough to allow me to take a few pictures, at the cost of filling his bowl with cat biscuits when I was done. Bribery may not get me everywhere, but on this occasion, I did manage a nice photo or two.

It is capturing moments like this that encourage me to keep on picking up the camera. A natural shot, straight from the camera, as most of my photos are, I caught sight of Chum sitting quietly in the morning sun in the garden, the bright rays that caught him allowed me to use f8 at 50 iso (the cameras maximums) effectively blanking out the shadowed background. The Laura is a small snake that mainly hunts lizards and frogs in light woodland and bush, replying on it's bright green coloration to avoid detection from raptors and other birds. A harmless snake, but no matter how harmless it is still killed on sight by humans simply because it is a snake. What a shame.
