Turning so close to the starting marker is an impressive display of the control the skipper has over the yacht in a gamble to gain valuable seconds, as a strong gust of wind could spell disaster with the yacht as such a precarious angle, the crew, undaunted by it all continue to prepare to race for open seas.

Tying off masts, dropping sails and raising sails is all part of the teamwork required by deck hands and at certain points during the racing the decks are a blur of activity as such tasks must be completed efficiently. Here a mixed crew of ladies and men work quickly to get underway for open waters.

Just love how the hull cuts through the waves in this photo, I was down on my knees hanging out the back end of a fishing boat trying to get as close to the waters surface as I dare, not so much for my safety but concern of digital cameras and salt water not mixing too well together.

Yacht racing photos - Taking a very sharp turn

I was on one knee at the back of the press boat (a small fishing boat with two powerful engines) when I turned to see the 'Lauraus' not eight feet away with bow squared straight at me, my head was about the same height as the crews shoes. A very sharp turn from the Lauraus and a dash forward by our skipper saved me one hell of a headache! The sharp turn toppled a crew member who had to be grabbed quickly or she would likely have gone overboard. Exciting stuff.

Yacht racing photography - Close running

For something a little different, as most photographers can imagine if they have not done so, getting up close and personal with racing yachts is a great way to spend a couple of hours. Lots of color, plenty of action and super to photograph. The skipper on the press boat really got us in the action and I had a thrilling time trying to capture the energy of these large and very fast moving yachts.

Sunset photos - Majestic Palm Trees. Standing like sentries to time itself tall coconut palm trees stand silently at dusk. Once the lifeblood of the Island, these majestic giants are slowly but steadily falling to bulldozers and what society calls advancement, but real people know better. Sunset photos of private houses and guest apartment buildings just do not have the same appeal to me.

It is capturing moments like this that encourage me to keep on picking up the camera. A natural shot, straight from the camera, as most of my photos are, I caught sight of Chum sitting quietly in the morning sun in the garden, the bright rays that caught him allowed me to use f8 at 50 iso (the cameras maximums) effectively blanking out the shadowed background. Bourgainvillea is not one of the easier flowers to photograph in my estimation, most shots just fail to make the mark one way or another. The gentle transition of light purple to cream white on this plant caught my eye and a macro focus.

In honor of floral Friday a couple of flower shots then, this being the Pride of Barbados (Caesalpinia pulcherrima) a strong grower in the tropics which is popular with hummingbirds. Macro shot taken with a Samsung 850Pro Natural light.
